Yantar Shipyard has to complete overhaul of Russian Navy Neustrashimy Yastreb-class frigate.

According to information published by the Russian press agency on February 4, 2021, Yantar Shipyard has to complete the overhaul of the Russian Navy Neustrashimy Yastreb-class frigate of project 11540 in 2021, shipyard CEO Ilya Samarin said.

“We expect three key developments this year: the completion of the Neustrashimy overhaul and the commissioning of the Voevoda and the Yevgeny Gorigledzhan ships,” he said.

The shipyard will continue building the Almaz oceanographic research vessel and is waiting for new military and civilian orders. Yantar will reconstruct the fifth and sixth embankments and complete the renewal of the pool of tools.

Yantar has been overhauling the frigate since 2014. The deadline was twice postponed because of major work and the necessity to overhaul Ukrainian-made engines. The overhaul of the main equipment of the warship has been completed.

The Neustrashimy is the lead frigate of project 11540 also called Neustrashimy-class. It was laid on March 25, 1987, and has been operational in the Baltic fleet since March 1991. Two ships of this class are in active service with the Russian Navy Baltic Fleet. The ship was designed as general-purpose anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigate and equipped with Zvezda-1 integrated sonar system (with NATO reporting name Ox Tail) as its primary ASW sensor.

The Neustrashimy frigate is powered by a combined gas turbine and gas turbine (COGAG) propulsion system including two M70 or D090 cruise and two M90 boost gas turbines. She can reach a top speed of 30 knots (56 km/h). 

The Neustrashimy frigate is armed with eight SS-N-25 (installed only on the Yaroslav Mudry) anti-ship missiles, four 8 VLS (Vertical Launching System) for SA-N-9 surface-to-air missile, 12-tube RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher, one 100mm naval gun, two Kashtan 30mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) and six 533mm torpedo tubes mounted in the superstructure for ASW missiles SS-N-15 or SS-N-16 or Type 53 ASW/ASuW torpedoes.
