Russian Navy Project 11356 frigate Admiral Grigorovich conducts air defense exercise.

According to information published by the Russian press agency TASS on January 12, 2021, the Black Sea Fleet’s Project 11356 frigate Admiral Grigorovich (NATO reporting name: Krivak V) operating as part of the Russian Navy’s permanent formation deployed in the Mediterranean Sea has practiced air defense exercise, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press office said.

“Under the combat training program, the crewmen practiced repelling the attacks of air-launched cruise missiles. During the exercise, the crew of the action information center detected and classified notional targets and an air defense team performed simulated missile launches to eliminate them when they were within the engagement range,” the press office said.

Besides, the crewmen are practicing daily routine, liaison, and maneuvering in various navigation situations. The Admiral Grigorovich has been operating as part of the Russian Navy’s permanent formation deployed in the Mediterranean Sea since December 2020.

The Admiral Grigorovich-class, also referred to as Krivak IV class, Russian designation Project 11356Р/М, is a class of frigates built by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad for the Russian Navy. The first of the class, the Admiral Grigorovich, was commissioned in 2016. It is in service by the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The Admiral Grigorovich-Class frigates have been designed to conduct anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-air warfare missions. The Admiral Grigorovich Class incorporates a stealthy hull design developed by the Severnoye Design Bureau. The hull and superstructures were designed to have low radar, acoustic and infrared signatures.

The Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate is armed with one 100 mm A-190 Arsenal naval gun, UKSK VLS (Vertical Launching System) cells able to launch Kalibr, Oniks or Zircon anti-ship cruise missiles, 24 3S90M VLS cells for 9M317M surface-to-air-missiles, two AK-630 CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), 8 Igla-S or Verba air defense missile systems, two double 533 mm torpedo tubes and one RBU-6000 rocket launcher.
