The Ufa diesel-electric submarine of project 636.3 completed the acceptance trials in the Baltic Sea, the Baltic fleet said. “The crew and the trial team checked the systems and mechanisms, weapons and technical units in a submerged and surfaced position, tested the submarine at full speed, as well as the sonar and radio equipment,” it said. It was earlier reported that the Ufa had submerged 190 meters deep in the Baltic Sea.

Project 636.3 Kilo-class SSKs (referred to as “Black Holes” by the U.S. Navy) is known for its quietness and features some of Russia’s most advanced submarine technology. Project 636.3 submarines (Improved Kilo by NATO classification) are the third generation of diesel-electric submarines which are the most noiseless in the world. They develop an underwater speed of 20 knots, submerge to 300 meters and have a cruising capacity of 45 days. The crew comprises 52 men, the underwater displacement is close to four thousand tons. They carry Kalibr missiles to strike at the surface (3M-54 and 3M-541) and ground targets (cruise missiles 3M-14) and have new electronic equipment.

The second improved Project 636.3 Kilo-class (Vashavyanka-class) diesel-electric attack submarine (SSK), the Volkhov, destined for service in the Russian Pacific Fleet, began dockside trials at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg, on March 2, 2020.

Admiralty shipyard officially delivered the first Project 636.3 Kilo-class SSK, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, to the Pacific Fleet in November 2019. The sub was handed over to the fleet during a ceremony at the shipyard on November 25, 2019. Both the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Volkhov were laid down at the same time.

Two more subs, the Magadan and the Ufa, were then under construction at the Admiralty shipyard, to be floated out in 2022, which has been achieved.
