Originally scheduled for February to support the European diplomatic and anti-piracy operation Atalanta, the Fasan is now set to transit through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on December 24. This decision follows a high-level meeting via video conference involving Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and other defense ministers. The meeting addressed the increasing threat posed by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have been attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

The deployment of Virgilio Fasan, a FREMM-class frigate, represents Italy's commitment to maintaining security in one of the world's most critical shipping corridors. The Red Sea is a vital route for the transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas, along with a wide range of consumer goods.

The Virgilio Fasan is a technologically advanced vessel, equipped with state-of-the-art detection and engagement systems. The frigate features a powerful radar system capable of tracking multiple airborne and maritime targets, including small, fast-moving objects such as unmanned aerial vehicles. This capability is crucial for monitoring and responding to potential threats in the complex maritime environment of the Red Sea.

In terms of armament, the Virginio Fasan is outfitted with a range of defensive and offensive weapons systems. These include surface-to-air missiles for aerial threats and advanced anti-ship missiles.

The ship also boasts sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities, enhancing its ability to disrupt the electronic communications and navigation systems of potential threats, including those from unmanned systems employed by the Houthis.
