The project at Devonport includes significant infrastructure enhancements to support the Royal Navy and the UK's Defence Nuclear Enterprise. Babcock will be responsible for the construction of a new dock, logistics, and support facilities, playing a pivotal role in maintaining the UK's entire submarine fleet.

This contract is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Devonport site, facilitating the maintenance and deep repair of both current and future submarine classes, including nuclear defueling.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps highlighted the contract's importance for national security, noting its role in job creation and economic growth in the south-west. The project is expected to generate over a thousand jobs and improve the dockyard, essential for the Royal Navy's operations.

Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency, emphasized the critical nature of investing in Devonport's submarine maintenance facilities for national security. He expressed confidence in Babcock's ability to deliver the necessary infrastructure for the Royal Navy's future submarine maintenance projects.

David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock, commented on the company's commitment to ensuring the Royal Navy's submarines are maintained and operationally ready. He noted that the investment would facilitate ongoing complex maintenance and life-extension programs.
