This section, destined for the first submarine in its class, named "District of Columbia" (SSBN 826), was transported by barge to a facility in Rhode Island.

This development is part of a broader initiative where the Columbia-class submarines will eventually replace the current fleet of Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

Columbia class submarines

These submarines measure approximately 560 feet in length and displace about 20,800 tons when submerged. In their design, a significant emphasis has been placed on stealth and endurance. They are equipped with a new life-of-the-boat nuclear reactor that allows them to operate for over 40 years without refueling.

This, combined with state-of-the-art quieting systems, significantly reduces their acoustic signature. The hull construction involves a new type of steel, enhancing depth capability and survivability.

The primary mission of the Columbia class is strategic deterrence, supported by a secondary capability for conventional strike and special operations support.

Each submarine carries 16 missile tubes designed for the Trident II D5 missiles, providing formidable strike capabilities. The class is also equipped with upgraded sonar systems, periscopes, and communication suites, which enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness.
