According to information released by the Russian press agency TASS on December 28, 2021, two Project 955A Borei-A class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (NATO reporting name: Dolgorukiy-class) will be laid down by the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) in 2023.

“Next year, we expect to sign a contract for the construction of another two Borei-A class strategic ballistic missile submarines. They are planned to be laid down by the Sevmash Shipyard in 2023,” the source said.

According to the source, the submarines will be built under the state armament program effective through 2027. They will be the 11th and 12th Borei-class submarines. Thus, the number of Project 955 Borei-class and Project 955A Borei-A class submarines will grow to 12.

The Russian Navy currently operates three Project 955 submarines, i.e. the Yuri Dolgorukiy, Vladimir Monomakh, and Alexander Nevsky, as well as two Project 955A Borei-A class subs, i.e. the Knyaz Vladimir and Knyaz Oleg. Another five Borei-A class submarines, the Imperator Alexander III, Knyaz Pozharsky, Generalissimo Suvorov, Dmitry Donskoy, and Knyaz Potemkin, are currently under construction.

The Borei-class is a series of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines being constructed by Sevmash for the Russian Navy including Project 955 Borei, Project 955A Borei-A, Project 955B (Borei-B), and Borei-K.

Borei class includes a compact and integrated hydrodynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and the first-ever use of pump-jet propulsion on a Russian nuclear submarine. The submarine us approximately 170 m. long, 13 meters in diameter, and have a maximum submerged speed of at least 25 knots (46 km/h).

The Borei-class is armed with 16 RSM-56 Bulava SLBMs (Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile) with 6 MIRVed (multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle) warheads. She also carries six of the SS-N-15 missiles. Each SS-N-15 is a 533mm caliber anti-ship missile that has a range of 45km and is capable of being fitted with a 20k warhead or a type 40 torpedo.

The Project 955A is equipped with improved communication and detection systems and has improved acoustic signature. Besides, they are equipped with hydraulic jets and improved screws that allow them to sail at nearly 30 knots while submerged with minimal noise. Although first reported to carry 20 Bulava SLBMs, the 955A will be armed with 16 SLBMs with 6-10 nuclear warheads.
