The ICGS Sajag is the ninth Samarth-class of the eleven offshore patrol vessels being built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard. The ships are being constructed in two batches—a batch of six ordered in May 2012 that was completed in December 2017 and a follow-on batch of five ordered in August 2016. The ICGS Sajag is the third in the Flight II series of Samarth-class OPV.

The Samarth-class has a length of 105 m, a beam of 13.6 m, a draught of 6.2 m, and a displacement of 2,450 tons. The ship is powered by two MTU 20V 8000 M71L engines rated at 9,100 kW (12,200 hp) driving two controllable pitch propellers. She can reach a top speed of 23 knots (43 km/h) with a maximum cruising range of 6,000 nautical miles (11,000 km) and an endurance of 20 days.

The Samarth-class is armed with one 30 mm CRN 91 Naval Gun, a naval version of the Medak 30mm automatic gun installed on the Sarath tracked armored IFV (Infantry fighting vehicle), and 12.7 mm HMG Heavy Machine Guns.

The ship is able to carry one twin-engine helicopter and four high-speed boats including tow inflatable bots which can be used for boarding operations, search and rescue, law enforcement, and maritime patrol. She is also capable of carrying pollution response equipment to combat oil spill contamination at sea.
