Zhuhai Airshow: CASIC unveiled the CM-708UNA Submarine Launched Anti-Ship Missile

At Zhuhai China Air Show 2014, (which was covered by our affiliate Army Recognition) Chinese defense company China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation (CASIC) unveiled a submarine launched anti-ship missile designated CM-708UNA. The system consists in a CM-708 anti-ship missile (also designated C-802, the export version of the YJ-8) with folding wings and a booster at its back encapsulated inside a torpedo-like capsule.

Thanks to its standard torpedo size, the system is launched through the torpedo tube of the submarine. The capsule is used for the underwater phase, and once it breaches the water surface, the front of the capsule is dropped and the missile itself is launched with the help of the additional booster (the booster is dropped after a few seconds and is there to help the missile reach its nominal speed and gain altitude).

A poster on display at the Norinco stand gives the following information:
CM-708UNA, a submarine-launched missile by torpedo tube, is applicable for various submarine platforms, undertaking the stealthy underwater attack mission aimed for the medium-to-large ships and inshore targets. The missile adpots underwater unpowered and controlled launchde mode, strap-down INS + satellite combined navigation, high precision radar seeker, digital control and other new technologies. The CM-708UNA adopts turbojet engine + solid rocket booster with 128km range.
The missile system features in high adaptability, highly concealed launched capability, strong defense penetration capability, high hit accuracy, etc.

Few countries have the knowhow to develop submarine launched anti-ship missiles (launched from the torpedo tube). The phase when the torpedo or missile travels from underwater, breaches the surface and lift off in the air is very complex. To date, these four countries developped such operational missiles:
- France with the SM39 Exocet
- United States with the UGM-84 Harpoon
- Russia with the 3M-54 Klub (SS-N-27A)
- China with the C-801 Ying Ji

Norway's Kongsberg is also working a submarine launched version of its NSM/JSM anti-ship missile as we reported earlier this year.
