Russian Navy Project 23120 logistic ship Elbrus starts builders sea trials

The Project 23120 lead logistic ship Elbrus has started undergoing builders sea trials at the Northern Shipyard in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia, the shipyard’s press office said.

The Russian Defense Ministry and Zelenodolsk Shipyard agreed last week on new deliveries of Project 21631 (NATO reporting name: Buyan-M-class) guided missile corvettes for the Russian Navy.

"During the first stage that will last seven days, an acceptance team of about 100 specialists will test all systems and equipment of the ship and check its main propulsion unit in various operation modes," the press office said.

"After the vessel returns to the outfitting quay, the shipyard will complete dock trials and remove imperfections," the press office added.

The second stage of the builders sea trials will be held simultaneously with the state tests and will last two weeks, the press office said. Then, the vessel’s equipment and systems will be checked and the ship will be prepared for towage to its naval base where it will be delivered to the Defense Ministry.

"The shipyard is planning to deliver the vessel to the Defense Ministry before the end of 2016," the press office said.

The Project 23120 logistic ship Elbrus was laid down in 2012. The ship was developed by Spetssudoproekt Design Bureau. The Project 23120 logistic ship Elbrus has a displacement of 9,500 tons, a speed of 18 knots and a cargo-carrying capacity of 4,500 tons. The logistic ship Elbrus features the reinforced ARC4 ice-class capability to operate in the Arctic and can negotiate an ice cap of 60 centimeters thick.
