GE LM500 Engines Power the ROK Navy’s PKX-B Chamsuri II-class Patrol Boat

GE announced that its LM500 marine gas turbines now power the Republic of Korea’s (ROK) first PKX-B patrol boat. The ROK Navy took delivery of this new surface combatant on October 30; the 220-ton PKX-B Chamsuri II class ship was built by the Hanjin Heavy Industries Inc. shipyard, and can attain speeds over 40 knots.

First Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship RCN Irving Canada AOPS
The Royal Canadian Navy’s first Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), the future HMCS Harry DeWolf, is now assembled at Irving Shipbuilding’s Halifax Shipyard. On December 8, 2017, the bow section of the first AOPS was transported on heavy lift transporters from inside the Halifax Shipyard’s indoor shipbuilding facility outside to land level. Work will continue over the coming weeks to fully join the bow mega-block and its components to the centre and stern mega-blocks, which were transported to land level in July 2017.

A French-German electromagnetic (EM) railgun project was unveiled during the 2017 "DGA Innovations" event hosted by the French defense procurement agency (DGA) yesterday. Launched by the ISL (French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis) in 1987, the project was mostly kept under cover until now.

Her Majesty The Queen has commissioned the UK's new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth into the Royal Navy. The Queen spoke at a ceremony in Portsmouth Naval Base, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson and military chiefs. In her role as the ship's Lady Sponsor Her Majesty addressed guests before the Ship's Commanding Officer, Captain Jerry Kyd, read the commissioning warrant.

Airbus Helicopters completes AS565 MBe Panther deliveries to Mexican Navy
The Mexican Navy has received its final two AS565 MBe Panther helicopters during a delivery ceremony at Airbus Helicopters in Marignane. With their order for ten units in 2014, the Mexican Navy became the launch customer of this new version. The first four helicopters were delivered in 2016 and the remaining six during the course of 2017.

The Pella Shipyard in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia has launched the advanced Project 11982 ocean survey vessel Ilmen, the Defense Ministry’s press office said. The launching ceremony was attended by Chief of the Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate for Deepwater Survey Vice-Admiral Alexei Burilichev, Deputy CEO of the Pella Shipyard Sergei Kukhtik, the administration of the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau and Navy officials.

Canada Turns Down FREMM bid for CSC while Naval Group & Fincantieri Stick to their Guns

The Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) issued a statement yesterday explaining that CSC proposals submitted outside of the established competitive process will not be considered. The statement was targeted at Naval Group and Fincantieri which opted not to answer the CSC request for proposals (RFP) but decided to go for a "government to government" offer instead.
