Poland's Orka Submarine programme: DCNS and PGZ Signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Poland's Polish Armament Group (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa - PGZ SA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with French naval shipbuilder DCNS which could lead to the joint construction of submarines in Poland.

"This signed agreement guarantees PGZ and the shipyards it owns the opportunity to participate in the construction of submarines in Poland," said PGZ General Manager Arkadiusz Siwko in a statement. Polish Naval Shipyard (SMW) joined PGZ in 2015.

Poland is currently considering proposals from Saab, DCNS and TKMS for the Orka submarine programme. Saab is offering its A26, DCNS its Scorpene and TKMS the Type 212A. Under the plan, three new submarines are to be delivered by 2023.

In October last year, Saab signed an MoU with PGZ for "the development of close cooperation between Saab and PGZ in the planning and delivery of Polish naval programs, including surface ship and submarine construction for the Polish Navy and export customers".

Back in June 2016, the German and the Polish navies signed an agreement that will lead to the establishment of a joint “Submarine Operating Authority”.

Update 26/01/2017:
Contacted by Navy Recognition, DCNS declared: "DCNS confirms that it has signed a purely industrial partnership agreement and sets the framework for discussions on how to cooperate in the field of Polish submarines and corvette naval programs."

About Scorpene SSK
In the submarines area, DCNS proposes to the Polish Navy the sea proven Scorpene class submarine with a highly performing acoustic discretion, an increased submerged autonomy thanks to the Fuel Cell 2nd Generation Air-Independent Propulsion system, and the capacity to integrate MBDA's Naval Cruise Missile (NCM).

According to DCNS, Scorpene class submarines, already chosen by the Chilean, Royal Malaysian, Indian and Brazilian Navies, represent the state-of-the-art in submarine design and construction. The SUBTICS Combat Management System offers a unique capacity to detect and track very distant noise emitters at high speeds. DCNS also proposes the CANTO countermeasure, offering a protection against numerous and simultaneous torpedo attacks even in case of unknown torpedo threats.
