Russia’s USC may start building 5th-generation diesel-electric submarine in five years
The construction of the first fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine may begin in five years, Head of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov said.
Lada class Diesel Electric Submarine (SSK) Project 677. It will serve as the basis for the 5th gen submarine.
"I believe it [the construction of the first fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine] will begin in five years," Rakhmanov said in reply to the relevant question.
As CEO of Russia’s Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering Igor Vilnit told TASS earlier, the Project 677 Lada-class submarine will serve as the basis for the fifth-generation diesel-electric submarine.
Russia’s Northern Fleet is conducting operational evaluation of the Project 677 lead submarine St. Petersburg. Two Project 677 submarines are currently under construction.
