Singapore Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the commissioning ceremony of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)'s Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs) RSS Sovereignty and RSS Unity at RSS Singapura - Changi Naval Base today. The commissioning of RSS Sovereignty and RSS Unity marks a significant milestone in the RSN's continued transformation to strengthen its capabilities, as the two LMVs join the rest of the Navy to safeguard Singapore's waters, protect its sea lines of communication and contribute to regional peace and security.

Chinese shipbuilding group China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) unveiled three new submarine designs at the Defense & Security 2017 defense exhibition held last week in Bangkok. The three designs are dedicated to the export market as they were showcased by the export arm of CSIC: China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC).

The U.S. Navy released pictures showing USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Strike Groups in transit in the Western Pacific with ships from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships JS Ise (DDH-182) and two Takanami-class destroyers. The U.S. 7th Fleet is conducting a three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific, Nov 11-14.
 

Egypt Received a Former ROK Navy Pohang-class Corvette from South Korea

A former Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy) Pohang-class corvette was transferred to Egypt last month. ROKS Jinju was decommissioned in December 2016, overhauled and then donated to the Egyptian Navy. The vessel reached Alexandria on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced this week that a tender for twelve naval helicopters for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy) will be issued in 2018. The ROK Navy acquired eight AW159 last year in two batches in June and December, respectively. The first four were deployed in February with Incheon-class frigates.

Thailand ordered the 3,650 tons frigate in August 2013 under a contract worth US$410 million.
 

Russia Discussing Gepard-5.1 Frigate Loan With Sri Lanka

Russia and Sri Lanka are planning to agree on a draft of the intergovernmental agreement on a loan for a Russian-made Gepard-5.1 frigate before the yearend, Deputy Director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Mikhail Petukhov said. Petukhov made this statement at the Defense & Security 2017 exhibition.
