Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) celebrated the start of construction on the first Joint Support Ship (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) last week. The steel cutting ceremony held at Vancouver Shipyards is a significant milestone for Seaspan, the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and Canada’s shipbuilding industry. With the start of construction on JSS, Seaspan is leading the way in rebuilding Canada’s shipbuilding industry. In addition, start of construction ensures that Seaspan will see the continued growth of Vancouver Shipyards’ workforce while mitigating any possible downturn in production.

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced this week that a tender for twelve naval helicopters for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy) has been issued. DAPA said that it will receive proposals from potential bidders until September 28, 2018.

On June 6, 2018, the main Peruvian naval base of Callao hosted the commissioning ceremony of landing platform dock (LPD) BAP Pisco (officially classified as a "multipurpose ship" - Buque Multipropósito). The amphibious vessel was built locally by Peruvian naval shipbuilding and shiprepair association (Servicio Industrial de la Marina de Guerra del Perú) SIMA in Callao. The ceremony was attended by the President of Peru Martin Viscarra.

Telephonics Corporation announced that it has been competitively awarded an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division valued at $31.8M to supply their APS-143C(V)3 as the multi-mode radar system for the United States Coast Guard's ("USCG") HC-27J Spartan medium-range maritime surveillance platform.

The development of the fifth-generation submarine in Russia was declared on December 16, 2014. Initially, the Malakhit bureau worked on the project as an initiative. On March 17, 2016, the code of the submarine was disclosed, Husky. On August 8, 2016, the Defense Ministry signed a contract to develop this nuclear submarine, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

Australia’s strategic priority on enhancing its submarine capability will be supported by Thales through major upgrades of the sonar systems on all six Collins class submarines. The A$230million contract with Thales is part of a A$542million project approved by the Australian Government for the upgrade of the Collins class sensor capabilities, the key to extending the life and the regional superiority of the Collins fleet.

The Russian Navy BS-64 Podmoskovye nuclear-powered submarine was recently spotted with its dosral payload cradle attached. The submarine is capable of rescuing a crew from a major depth. The operation is completely secret and can be carried out under the ice. No other country currently possesses such technologies. Experts believe the new vessel will accelerate assistance to submariners in distress, the Izvestia daily writes.

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a contract by Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) to deliver ST2400 VDS (Variable Depth Sonar) upgrades to the SQ2000MLU program for the Hamina-Class Corvettes fleet. The ST2400 VDS is designed to provide accurate and highly reliable performance for detecting submarines, mines and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles in Littoral waters. The ST2400 VDS upgrade will enable the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability on all four Hamina-Class Corvettes operating in the Baltics.

BAE Systems has received a contract to produce payload tubes for two of the U.S. Navy’s new Virginia-class submarines to support increased firepower on the Block V version of the attack subs. Under the contract with General Dynamics Electric Boat, a builder of the Virginia class, BAE Systems will deliver two sets, each consisting of four tubes, for the Virginia Payload Modules on the SSN 804 and SSN 805.
