Sevmash plans to lay down two Yasen-M nuclear subs in 2020-2021

The Sevmash Shipbuilding Company based in Severodvinsk will lay down two Yasen-M nuclear-powered submarines of project 885M at its shipyards in 2020-2021 under a contract which was concluded at the Army-2019 International Military-Technical Forum, the company’s Head Mikhail Budnichenko told TASS on the sidelines of the International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS-2019).

"These two submarines will be laid down approximately in 2020-2021," he said.

"The construction period for these submarines is 7 years. So, they may join the Navy in 2027-2028," Budnichenko said when asked when the submarines could be expected to be handed over to the fleet.

At present, Sevmash, an affiliate of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, has built and handed over to the fleet the Severodvinsk submarine of project 885 "Yasen". The Kazan, the first upgraded submarine of project 885M "Yasen-M", has been floated and is undergoing trials. Sevmash is building another five submarines of this project. They are at various stages of construction.

Submarines of this type have been developed by the Malakhit Design Bureau. They can carry the Oniks and the Kalibr cruise missiles. Unlike on the previous-generation submarines, the torpedo tubes are located in the bow (a sonar system with a spherical antenna, which makes it possible to detect the adversary at large distances, is also located in the nose section).
