Russian Magadan submarine to start sea trials in June


According to information published by Tass on April 6, 2021, the Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine Magadan is planned to start to undergo its builders’ sea trials in June 2021, the Defense Ministry’s press office said.

The Magadan submarine is being built by the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard that is a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

“The submarine is currently being outfitted at the shipyard’s berth,” the press office said.

The crew of the Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine Magadan will arrive in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia in late April to man the submarine and support all stages of its trials. The crew is currently undergoing training at the Navy’s training center in Obninsk.

The Magadan is the third Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine being built by the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard for the Pacific Fleet. It was laid down on November 1, 2019 and launched on March 26, 2021. The submarine is expected to be delivered to the Navy in 2021.

Project 636.3 also called Varshavyanka class is an upgraded version of the Kilo-class submarines that entered into service with the Russian Navy in June 2014. The new submarine features stealth technology as well as extended cruising range and the ability to strike surface, land, and underwater targets. They are crewed by 52 submariners, have an underwater speed of 20 knots, and a cruising range of 400 miles with the ability to patrol for 45 days.

The Project 636.3 submarines can launch Kalibr / Club land-attack cruise missile, anti-ship missile, and anti-submarine missile. The submarine is also armed with 533-millimeter torpedo tubes and carried a total of 18 torpedoes.
