Vard Marine from Canada to develop design of new multipurpose transport vessel for Chilean Navy


According to information published by the InfoDefensa website on January 19, 2021, the Chilean Navy has selected the Canadian company Vard Marine to develop the design of a new multipurpose transport vessel.

Vard Marine Inc was one of the three shortlisted companies selected for the Request of Information and Interest of Prequalification international tender. According to the Canadian shipyard, the contract design for the new multipurpose transport vessel for the Chilean Navy was signed in December 2020.

Vard Marine (VARD) is a naval architecture and marine engineering company with headquarter in Canada. The company has broad experience in all aspects of ship design including specialized analyses, such as computational fluid dynamics, seakeeping analysis, and finite element analysis.

The design contract awarded to Vard Marine will allow the construction of a new multipurpose transport vessel that will replace the LST-92 Rancagua, LST-95 Chacabuco landing ships and AP-41 Aquiles cargo transport vessel.

The LST-92 and LST-95 are landing ship built for the Chilean Navy by the Industrial Plant at ASMAR in Talcahuano. These ships were built based on the design of Batral-class landing ship of the French Navy, according to an agreement between Chilean and French governments.
