The Diesel engines tests of the S-81 Isaac Peral were successfully conducted on Friday, November 12, 2021, at the Armament Dock of the Cartagena shipyard.

The S-80 is a series of four submarines that will be built by the Spanish shipyard Navantia. The lead boat in the S-80 class, the Isaac Peral (S-81), the first unit in the series, was launched by King Felipe VI and his daughter, Princess Leonor, heir to the throne, on April 22, 2021, at the Cartagena shipyards, with plans to enter service in 2023.

The S-80 Plus-class submarine is designed to improve threat scenario missions. Their operational mobility will allow them to operate in remote areas, traveling discreetly at high speeds. Their air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, of new technological design, will ensure their ability to remain in an area for a very long period of time without being detected and their ability to operate in possible conflict zones.

The S-80 is equipped with combat systems for multiple target acquisition in different scenarios. She will be able to transport military personnel including Special Forces. The design of the submarine provides low noise and magnetic signatures as well as low radar and infrared signatures in order to minimize detection.

The S-80 is powered by three bio-ethanol engines, one 3,500kW main electric engine, and a 300kW air-independent propulsion (AIP) reactor. The S-80's air-independent propulsion (AIP) system is based on a bioethanol-processor consisting of a reaction chamber and several intermediate Coprox reactors. Provided by Hynergreen from Abengoa, the system transforms the bioethanol (BioEtOH) into high purity hydrogen. The output feeds a series of fuel cells from UTC Power Company. The S-80 is able to reach a top speed of 12 knots (22 km/h) on the surface and 19 knots (35 km/h) when submerged.

The S-80 Plus-class submarines have a full load displacement of 3,200 tons, a total length of 81.05 m, a beam of 11.68 m, and a draught of 6.20 m. The submarine has a crew of 32 personnel and can accommodate eight troops.
