Russia : Two project 636.3 submarines will be laid down on November 1

Two project 636.3 diesel electric submarines - the Ufa and the Magadan - will be laid down at Admiralty Shipyards enterprise in St. Petersburg on November 1, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy, said at a working meeting held in the Admiralty building. The gathering was devoted to the construction of serial project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines for the Pacific Fleet, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"Admiral Yevmenov also heard the reports of the heads of specialized departments and directorates on the state of readiness to lay down the Ufa and the Magadan submarines at the Admiralty Shipyards. He also met a number of officials responsible for ship construction in the Navy to discuss the application of technologies, which take account of the peculiarities of operation of submarines in conditions of the Far East, in the construction of the Ufa and the Magadan," the ministry said.

For his part, Alexander Buzakov, director-general of the Admiralty Shipyards enterprise, briefed the commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy on the state and development of the production assets at the enterprise. "The laying down of two submarines simultaneously is a unique phenomenon for the ship builders and the sailors. It illustrates the plant’s capabilities and the maturity of the process of batch construction of non-nuclear submarines," Buzakov said.

Admiral Yevmenov stressed the importance of "maintaining the achieved high level of interaction with the United Shipbuilding Corporation in the construction of warships."

He added that a second project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine - the Volkhov - will be floated at Admiralty Shipyards in December.
