The new Borei-A class submarine "Knyaz Vladimir" (Prince Vladimir in English) was officially commissioned during a ceremony presided by Navy chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, and attended by other senior military, state and military industry officials.

The Borei-A class submarine "Knyaz Vladimir" will join the 31st Submarine Division of the Russian Navy Northern Fleet. Rigorous state testing of the vessel was carried out in late 2019, with further testing taking place between May 12-21 to resolve problem areas pointed out by the Russian defense ministry.

The Knyaz Vladimir was laid down at Sevmash in July 2012 and is the first of seven Borei-A class vessels expected to be fielded over the coming decade. In addition to their strategic weapons, the fourth-generation nuclear submarines feature improved silent propulsion, better maneuvering and prolonged operation at depth capability, and advanced weapons control systems. The Borei-A class is the successor to Project 955 Borei, a nuclear missile sub design created during the late Cold War by the Rubin Design Bureau and built in the 1990s and 2000s, with three original Borei-class vessels completed and fielded.

The Borei Class is a fourth-generation nuclear-powered missile submarine produced by the Russian naval defense company Sevmash. The Borei-A is an improved version of the Borei class submarine with new communication and detection systems, improved acoustic signature. The Borei-A is able to carry 16 Bulava SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile) which is based on the Topol M design. The missile has a length of 12.1m with a diameter of 2.1. It has a weight of 36.8 metric tonnes and a range of 8,000 km. it also has eight 533-mm forward torpedo tubes, nearly 40 torpedoes, missile-torpedoes, and torpedo mines. It carries autonomous sonar countermeasures devices.

The Borei-A submarine has a length of nearly 170 meters, a width of 13.5 meters and a displacement of 24,000 tons. It has a maximum depth of 480 meters. It carries a 90-days food supply for the crew. As for its life-support systems, it can operate autonomously for decades. Its crew numbers 107 members.
