According to a statement published by the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD), the Project Yasen-M lead nuclear-powered underwater missile-carrying cruiser Kazan successfully fired a P-800 Oniks anti-ship cruise missile against a sea target on November 30, 2020. The missile has a maximum range of 300 km and carries a a 200 kg HE (High Explosive) warhead or a 250 kg Armor-Piercing Warhead.

The submarine entered the final stage of state trials with the crew and the acceptance team on its board on November 21. At combat training naval ranges, the submarine’s crew will practice maneuvering in the surface and submerged positions at various depths and check the operation of the sub’s basic systems. During its deployment to the sea, specialists will check the sub’s systems and assemblies and shipborne armament.

The Russian Navy has ordered eight Project 885-M submarines, the Kazan and Novosibirsk have conducted sea trials and six other submarines are under construction. These new submarines are designed by Malakhit and being constructed by Sevmash for the Russian Navy.

The K-561 Kazan is a Project 885M Yasen-M class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine of the Russian Navy. It is an improved version of the Yasen-class. The Kazan was laid down on July 24, 2009, and floated out on March 31, 2017. The sub is currently undergoing trials and is expected to join the Russian Navy in late 2020. The nuclear-powered submarine Kazan will operate in the Northern Fleet.

According to Malakhit Design Bureau, the Yasen-M class will have an advanced design that would significantly increase its ability to detect enemy vessels at speeds far higher than those of its predecessors. The bow section will be acoustically clean and will be entirely dedicated to housing sonar systems, with the torpedo systems relocated to another part of the boat. A new power supply and acoustic defense systems have been developed for the boat in order to reduce the noise signature and increase its stealth capability. The boat features optimized hull shape, upgraded electronic warfare (EW) and automation systems, two more vertical launching system silos, a pump-jet propulsion system allowing for silent operation, and new torpedo tubes.

The armament of Yasen-M class submarine includes 3M-54 Kalibr supersonic cruise missiles and P-800 Oniks over-the-horizon supersonic anti-ship missiles. In the future, the SSN will be armed with the hypersonic 3M22 Tsirkon or Zircon missile.  The submarine also has 10 torpedo tubes (533 mm) and Igla-M surface-to-air defense missile system.
