The Carrier Strike Group 11 (CSG-11 or CARSTRKGRU 11) is a U.S. Navy carrier strike group. Carrier strike groups gain and maintain sea control as well as project naval airpower ashore. A carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation of both the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. In the US Navy it is composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, usually an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship.

The aircraft carrier Nimitz is the strike group's current flagship. Other units currently assigned to the group include the cruisers Lake Erie and Princeton Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers and Destroyer Squadron 9 that includes USS Shoup (DDG 86), USS Preble (DDG 88), USS Momsen (DDG 92), USS Sterett (DDG 104) Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers and USS Ingraham (FFG 61) Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate.

The US Navy aircraft carrier Nimitz is part of Carrier Strike Group Eleven (CSG-11) with Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) embarked, with Nimitz as the flagship of the strike group and the home of the commander of Destroyer Squadron 23 including VFA-22 Strike Fighter Squadron 22 with F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter, VMFA-323 Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 with F/A-18C Hornet fighter, VFA-94 Strike Fighter Squadron 94 with F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter, VFA-137 Strike Fighter Squadron 137 with F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter, VAQ-139 Electronic Attack Squadron 139 with EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, VAW-116 Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 116 with E-2C Hawkeye carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, HSC-6 Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6 with MH-60S Seahawk naval helicopters, HSM-73 Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 with MH-60R Seahawk naval helicopters and VRC-30 Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30 (detachment) with C-2A Greyhound high-wing cargo aircraft.

The USS Nimitz is a supercarrier of the U.S. Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched and commissioned as CVAN 68 but was later re-designated CVN 68 (nuclear-powered multi-mission aircraft carrier) on June 30, 1975 as part of the fleet realignment. Nimitz was homeported at Naval Statio Norfolk until 1987, when she was relocated to Naval Station Bremerton in Washington State (now part of Naval Base Kitsap).

The U.S. Navy has a total of 9 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers including  USS Nimitz (CVN68), USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS John C Stennis (CVN 74), USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75), and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).

The Nimitz is powered by two General Electric pressurized water reactors driving four turbines of 260,000hp (194MW) and four shafts. There are four emergency diesel of 10,720hp (8MW).

It can carry up to 90 planes including F/A-18E/F Hornets, 36 F/A-18 Hornets, four E-2C Hawkeyes and four EA-6B Prowlers fixed-wing and helicopters, including four SH-60F and two HH-60H Seahawks.

The Nimitz armament includes 16–24 RIM-7 Sea Sparrow or NATO Sea Sparrow air defense missiles and 3 or 4 × Phalanx CIWSs (Close-In Weapon Systems) or RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Surface-to-Air Missiles
