"The fifth Project 636.3 submarine is planned to be put afloat on March 17. This event will be dedicated to Submariner Day and the 110th anniversary of the Russian submarine fleet that are celebrated on March 19," the source said. "The sixth submarine Kolpino will be floated out in May in accordance with the schedule," the source added.

According to the source, the conventional submarines Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino will be delivered to Russia’s Navy before the end of 2016.

The Russian Navy already operates four Project 636.3 conventional submarines. The lead submarine Novorossiysk joined the Russian Navy in August 2014. The second Project 636.3 conventional submarine Rostov-on-Don was delivered to the Russian Navy on December 30, 2014. The third Project 636.3 submarine Stary Oskol has been operational with Russia’s Navy since July 2015. The fourth Project 636.3 submarine Krasnodar joined the Navy on November 5, 2015. All Project 636.3 submarines undergo deep-water trials in the north before joining Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The Project 636.3 conventional submarine Rostov-on-Don delivered a missile strike against facilities of the Islamic State terrorist organization (outlawed in Russia) in the Syrian province of Raqqa in December 2015 for the first time in the history of the Russian submarine fleet.
