"Today, we are launching the fifth submarine of the series, the Veliky Novgorod, for the Black Sea Fleet," Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Alexander Fedotenkov said during the launching ceremony.

As was reported in the press, the sixth submarine in the family, the Kolpino, is planned for launching in May 2016. In all, the Black Sea Fleet is to receive six Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarines.

The Russian Navy operates a fleet of four Project 636.3 submarines. The lead ship, the Novorossiisk, was delivered in August 2014, the second one, the Rostov-on-Don, on December 30, 2014, the third ship of the family, the Stary Oskol, was received in July 2015 and the fourth submarine in the series, the Krasnodar, was handed over to the Navy on November 5, 2015.

In December 2015, the Rostov-on-Don delivered a missile attack on the Russia-banned Islamic State terrorist group in the Syrian province of al-Raqqa from the Mediterranean Sea - the first strike of the kind in the Russian submarine fleet’s history.
