The Odintsovo Karakurt-class corvette of project 22800 is testing the latest Pantsir-M anti-aircraft missile launcher. It destroys helicopter gunships, assault jets, cruise and antiship missiles. The corvette will be able to down all air targets in a radius of 20 km, the Izvestia daily writes.

Yasen-A-class SSGN of project 885M will serve in the Arctic. Five nuclear submarines will operate in the Northern fleet. They will be armed with Kalibr cruise and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. A well-protected base will be built with all the necessary infrastructure for combat duty. Experts said the SSGN will increase the national defense capability. They can control the whole Atlantic Ocean and the eastern US coast, the Izvestia daily writes.

The latest frigates of project 22350 will be deployed in the Black Sea. They are armed with Kalibr cruise and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. All the necessary infrastructure will be built. Experts say the Russian frigates will be a major deterrence in the region. Their deployment is a response to the USA after its withdrawal from the INF Treaty which poses a threat of deployment of American attack weapons in Romania, the Izvestia said.

Borey-A-class SSBN of project 955A will operate in the Far East. Five out of eight submarines will serve in the Pacific fleet. The Navy is restoring the Far Eastern nuclear arsenal which was nearly lost thirty years ago. Project 22160 corvettes learned to provide guidance to Vityaz S-350 and Triumf S-400 air defense launchers against adversary aircraft and helicopters. The launchers remain unnoticed, as they do not switch on radars up to the strike. Experts believe the new tactic will increase effectiveness and survivability of air defense, the Izvestia daily writes.

Open sources reported in July 2018 that it had been decided to take a break in the creation of a prospective destroyer (heavy nuclear missile cruiser) of project 23560. A publication in February 2020 in FlotProm online media outlet did not add anything new. However, the headline Leader Destroyer Listed as Outsider and some statements (project stopped because of lack of funds, a prospective nuclear cruiser is not even discussed, it is a distant future) caused concern of specialists. Expert Alexander Shishkin writes about project 23560 prospects in his blog.

The Defense Ministry considered the activities of the Northern fleet in 2019-2025 and Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said it had been reinforced by another air defense division to defend the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route. The Army Standard online publication assessed the strength of the fleet.

The Navy is requesting $207.1 billion, of which $194.1 billion is for its base operations and $13 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations. This is a $2.9 billion decrease from 2020, with an 8.3% reduction in procurement to fund a 3.8% increase in operations and maintenance, a 6.4% increase in military personnel, and a 5.1% increase in research and development, according to the Navy’s budget request document released on February 10 2020.
