Pending parliamentary approval, the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) is set to procure a second support ship, two M-frigates replacement and six mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels. The frigates and MCM vessels are new designs under development with Belgium. According to the RNLN, Secretary of State for Defence Barbara Visser informed these wishes by letter to the House of Representative on May 3,2018.

The U.S. Navy down selected five ship designs to compete for the FFG(X) Frigate Program on February 16, 2018. Austal USA, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Lockheed Martin and Huntington Ingalls Industries received a contract award for "conceptual design" of their frigate proposals.

At the 6th French defense procurement agency (DGA) Innovation Forum held last week near Paris, SOFRESUD, a company involved in Naval Defense and Maritime Surveillance, unveiled a naval pointer of new generation. This pointer named "Intuitive Pointing Device" (IPD) supplements the capabilities of complex automated systems typically found aboard vessels. Such systems can have difficulty to detect fast and stealthy targets with a low radar cross-section (RCS) and low-level surface or ground-based targets. Specifically designed for asymmetric threats, IPD further increases ship survivability.

The Severodvinsk nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine (SSGN) of project 885 became operational in the Russian Navy three years ago. Armed with Onix and Kalibr missiles it operates in the Northern fleet. In foreseeable future a project 885M boat of Yasen-M class is to become operational in the Navy. It will be built by an upgraded project and enjoy unique characteristics, including decreased noisiness. The submarine named Kazan is the first one in the series which will comprise the backbone of the Russian underwater forces, the Zvezda broadcaster reported.

Navy Recognition recently had the chance to visit Karlskrona naval base in Southern Sweden thanks to Swedish defense group Saab. Karlskrona is the main naval base of the Swedish Navy and a pretty unique site: The base is fairly ancient as it was created in 1680. Many old buildings remain visible on the base such as one of the longest wooden building in the world, the 300 meters long rope walk, which was used for rope making.

French shipbuilding group Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS) continues to flesh out the design of its Belharra frigate currently being developed for the French Navy (Marine Nationale). A new scale model of the FTI (frégate de taille intermédiaire or mid-size frigate) showcased during the Pacific 2017 naval defense event shows that Naval Group has been busy in the past year optimizing the design around the bridge area and the helicopter hangar, providing a much improved look to the next generation surface combatant.

During a recent underway to test weapons capabilities, guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) conducted a live-fire missile exercise using the updated AEGIS Baseline 9 weapons system. There are currently 84 U.S. Navy ships in service with variations of the AEGIS Weapons System installed: 22 cruisers and 62 destroyers, with Mobile Bay being the first cruiser to upgrade to Baseline 9 software and capabilities, with minor changes in equipment on top of the Baseline 8 system.
