BAE System Awarded Contract for 6th Astute-class SSN Attack Submarine Agagmemnon
BAE Systems has been awarded a £1.4 billion contract by the UK’s Ministry of Defence to deliver the next Astute class submarine to the Royal Navy. Agamemnon will be the sixth of seven nuclear-powered attack submarines designed and manufactured at the Company’s site at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The fifth Lockheed Martin-built Mobile User Objective System (MUOS-5) satellite is now delivering secure, beyond-line-of-sight communications to troops with legacy Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radios. The U.S. Navy, working with Army Forces Strategic Command, configured one of MUOS-5's two communications payloads – its legacy UHF payload – to provide additional support for the Navy's legacy UHF satellite communications mission. Today, narrowband UHF communications is used by every Combatant Command in aircraft, ships, submarines, ground vehicles, as well as by troops in the field and special operations.

The Project 885M Yasen-M-class (NATO reporting name: Severodvinsk-class) Kazan nuclear-powered attack submarine is shorter than the lead ship in the class, the Severodvinsk, and furnished with cutting-edge equipment and weapons, according to the Izvestia daily. The sophisticated nuclear-powered Kazan is several meters shorter than the lead ship. The Russian Navy operates a single Project 885 sub, the Severodvinsk, at present. The Kazan launched in March this year has been redesigned completely.

Gorky. Construction of the Project 21631 corvette commenced in 2010. The Zelenodolsk Shipyard won the related competition, in which nine enterprises took part.

USNS Yuma, named after the City of Yuma, Arizona, is the eighth Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) vessel designed and constructed by Austal for the USN, under a contract for twelve vessels worth in excess of US$1.9 billion.

The Russian Defense Ministry has published pictures of the inside of the military compound on Alexandra Land Island of the Franz Josef Land Archipelago, which has become part of the world’s northernmost military base designated as Arctic Shamrock and intended for 150 troops, including some from the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet air defense units, according to the Gazeta.ru news portal.

French MoD Awards DCNS Development & Production Contract of FTI Mid-Size Frigate
The French Defence Ministry announced the attribution to DCNS of a contract for the development and construction of five FTI (Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire or mid-size frigate) surface combatant intended for the French Navy. DCNS will propose a French version of its new BELH@RRA frigate which was unveiled at Euronaval 2016. The first of the five frigates from this DGA-managed programme should be delivered in 2023 with an entry into active duty in 2025.

The Project 877 diesel-electric submarine Ust-Bolsheretsk has re-entered service with Russia’s Pacific Fleet after repairs, fleet spokesman Captain 2nd Rank Vladimir Matveyev told TASS. The submarine’s strength hull, sonars and diving system were repaired, the spokesman added.

MBDA has received a £175 million contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for further In-Service Support to the Sea Viper weapon system, securing a key capability of the Type 45 fleet. Called ‘Sea Viper Unified Support Environment Period 1’, the contract will cover the continuing in-service support to the Sea Viper weapon system, including the Aster missile that protects the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers, for the next 5 years.
