Saudi Navy officially launches its new corvette Avanti 2200 Al-Dariyah built by Navantia


According to a Tweet and information published by the Saudi Press Agency on November 14, 2020, Royal Saudi Naval Forces has officially launched its new corvette Avanti 2200 christened HMS Al-Dariyah, designed and built by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia.

The launching ceremony was held at the same time in the Saudi Naval Forces Headquarters and Navantia shipyard, in San Fernando, Cadiz, Spain. The corvette was officially named His Majesty Ship Al-Dariyah and it the second ship within the project of Sarawat.

On 12 July 2018, the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a contract with the Spanish Shipyard Navantia for the construction of five corvettes for an amount of €1.8 billion. The corvettes will be based on the AVANTE 2200 design with new features according to the requirements of the Royal Saudi Arabian Navy. It is the biggest contract in the history of the public Spanish shipyards with a foreign customer.

This contract, which has been negotiated by the kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the year 2015, will suppose a global workforce of about 7 million hours for the shipyards of Bay of Cadiz, Estuary of Ferrol and Cartagena, as well as for his auxiliary industry. In addition, NAVANTIA will be responsible for the Support to the Life cycle for five years, from the delivery of the first nose, with option to other five additional years.

The Saudi corvettes are based on AVANTE 2200 design, adapted to the requirements of Saudi Arabia, offering advanced presentations, excellent behavior in the sea, high capacity of survival and capacity of operation at extreme temperatures as the area of the Gulf, all this with an ideal life cycle cost.

The Avante 2200 corvette has an overall length of 98.9 m, a maximum beam of 13.6 m, and a design draught of 3.8 m. With a full load displacement of roughly 2,470t, the ship can accommodate up to 111 sailors. 

The design of the corvettes is lthe ast generation, maximizing simultaneously Navantia’s participation incorporating own products as the system of combat CATIZ, the system of integrated communications HERMESYS, the direction of shot DORNA, the Integrated System of Control of Platform, the integrated bridge MINERVA and the engines and the reduction gearboxes.
