The Carl Vinson is homeported in San Diego, Ca., and departed Aug. 2 in support of global maritime security operations.

With more than 70 aircraft and 5,000 crew, the Carl Vinson is capable of performing a wide range of missions. This is the first time that a carrier strike group has deployed with the advanced capabilities of the F-35C Lightning II and Navy CMV-22B Osprey. Out of respect for current health conditions, during the scheduled port visit, liberty for the crew will be limited to the installation only.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the United States Navy's third Nimitz-class supercarrier. The ship was launched in 1980, undertook her maiden voyage in 1983, and underwent refueling and overhaul between 2005 and 2009.

The Nimitz class is a class of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service with the United States Navy. All ten carriers were constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia. USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned on 3 May 1975, and USS George H.W. Bush, the tenth and last of the class, was commissioned on 10 January 2009. Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph) and a maximum power of around 260,000 shaft horsepower (190 MW).

The Nimitz-class carriers have a length of 1,092 ft (333 m) overall, 1,040 ft (317 m) at the waterline, and a beam of 134 ft (41 m). They have a full-load displacement of 101,196 long tons (102,820 t). The ship's complement is 558 officers and 5,454 enlisted (including airwing).
