The flag-raising ceremony took place at the Novorossiysk naval base, he added. “The Boris Slobodnik boat has joined the sea area defense formation of the Black Sea Fleet’s Novorossiysk naval base. The boat’s crew will soon practice qualification missions and then start to accomplish assigned tasks,” the spokesman said.
Earlier, the boat underwent state trials in the Black Sea, during which all life support systems, onboard equipment and running capabilities were checked.
The Boris Slobodnik is the fourth Project 23040G large hydrographic boat. The Project 23040G boat is designed to carry out high-precision sea bottom survey and examine navigational dangers at a depth of 400 meters. It can also survey the sea bottom at depths of 2,000 meters with the use of a single-beam echo sounder. Boats of the type allow the Navy’s hydrographic service to provide maintenance for all types of buoys and set up and remove buoys with a weight of 1.7 tons and a length of up to 6.5 meters.
The Project 23040G boat can transport military personnel, food and water supplies, spare parts and maintenance teams to coastal navigational facilities, support search-and-rescue operations, pilot and escort submarines and heavy-tonnage ships at bases and in approaches to them. The boat’s crew totals nine. It has one single and five double-berthed cabins to accommodate the crew and seconded servicemen.
