Sevastopol is the main base of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. Over the past month, there have been several attempts to attack it with drones. On December 6, the governor said two drones had been downed over the sea near Sevastopol. Earlier, air defenses destroyed three unmanned aerial vehicles that had tried to attack the city from the sea.
It could be the famous Tupolev Tu-141 reconnaissance drones that recently hit Russian air force bases Dyagilevo and Engels-2.
About the Tupolev Tu-141 drones
The Tupolev Tu-141 Strizh is a Soviet reconnaissance drone that served with the Soviet Army during the late 1970s and 1980s, as well as the Ukrainian Armed Forces since 2014.
The Tu-141 reconnaissance UAV is designed to operate at transonic speeds to a depth of several hundred kilometers (up to 400 km) from the frontline.
The drone is equipped with photo and infrared reconnaissance facilities. This peculiarity enables its operation under any weather conditions and at any time of the day.
The characteristics of the Tu-141 Strizh UAV give it a good ability to overcome enemy air defense due to its speed and capability to operate at low and high altitudes. These drones are very difficult to shoot down by air defense, besides, they do not go on the air and do not transmit any information.
This drone is capable of speeds in excess of 1,000 km/h and operates within a radius of up to 1,000 km. The weight of the drone is more than 5,300 kg.
