Amphibious assault ship USS America successfully fires RIM-116 missile


According to information published by the US DoD on January 25, 2023, the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) fired a RIM-116 rolling airframe missile, during routine operations, while underway in the Philippine Sea.

The crew aboard the ship detected, tracked, and engaged a target to maintain proficiency of the onboard weapons systems and confirm the crew’s warfighting readiness.

USS America with Amphibious Squadron 11 and USS Green Bay (LPD 20) are sailing as the America Amphibious Ready Group to create a warfighting team committed to maintaining freedom of navigation and stability in the area of operations.

About the USS America

The USS America (LHA-6) is an America-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy. It is the fourth ship of the Navy to bear the name America. The ship was built by Huntington Ingalls Industries and was commissioned in October 2014.

The USS America has a displacement of approximately 44,971 tons and is 844 feet (257 meters) in length. It has a top speed of more than 20 knots and a range of more than 9,500 nautical miles.

The ship is equipped with a variety of weapons systems, including the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System, Sea Sparrow missiles, and two 20mm Mk 15 Phalanx CIWS. It also carries two landing spots for aircrafts and helicopter.

The ship is designed to support amphibious operations and has a well deck that can launch and recover landing craft, as well as a flight deck that can accommodate aircraft and helicopters.

It can carry a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) of up to 1,900 Marines, as well as a variety of vehicles and equipment. The USS America also has advanced command and control systems, as well as medical facilities, to support operations. The ship is crewed by around 1,100 sailors.
