WDS 2024: Qatar showcases its NHIndustries NH90 helicopter in Riyadh

At the World Defense Show (WDS) 2024, held in Riyadh, the Qatar Emiri Air Force took the opportunity to showcase its NHIndustries NH90 helicopter. It is interesting to note that a few years ago such a presence would not have been possible given the turbulence between Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Developed by NHIndustries—a partnership between Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland), and Fokker Aerostructures—the NH90 is designed to fulfill a variety of military roles, including troop transportation, cargo support, special operations, search and rescue, and maritime patrol.

The NH90 features a fly-by-wire flight control system aimed at improving flight performance and safety. It is equipped with two Turbomeca RTM322 engines, or alternatively GE T700-T6E1 engines, to ensure operational efficiency across various environments, from desert heat to Arctic cold.

The helicopter's avionics and navigational systems include a fully integrated avionics suite and a glass cockpit designed to reduce pilot workload and enhance situational awareness. Its communication systems are intended for compatibility with existing military networks, facilitating coordination during operations.

Constructed with a composite fuselage, the NH90 offers reduced weight and increased resistance to corrosion, an advantage for maritime missions. Its design includes a rear ramp for efficient loading and unloading of troops and equipment, highlighting its versatility for different mission types.
