"The [fleet’s] first Su-30SM fighter assigned to an air squadron of the naval air station of the Baltic Fleet has landed at the airfield in the town of Chernyakhovsk," he said.

The aircraft arrived to the Kaliningrad Region from Irkutsk, where it had been built. Several more fighters of the type will be delivered to the Baltic Fleet’s naval aviators as part of the combat gear procurement process in 2017, Martov said.

The first air crews have converted to the Su-30SM in the Naval Aviation Combat Training and Conversion Center in Yeisk. The conversion course’s graduates will assist their comrades in learning the ropes on the new type of aircraft right in the unit as the fighters are ferried in.

The Su-30SM (SM standing for ‘production-standard, modernized’ in Russian) multirole fighter is designed for both air superiority and surface target attack. Its design includes canards and swiveling-nozzle engines. The solutions afforded the aircraft supermaneuverability. The Su-30SM carries the Bars multifunction fire control radar and a wide array of weapons, including air-to-air missiles and precision-guided air-to-surface munitions. The fighter also can be used for training pilots for future single-seat aircraft. The type has been in production for the Russian Air Force.
