"The second serial-produced Project 12700 mine sweeper Ivan Antonov built by the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard in St. Petersburg [in northwest Russia] for the Russian Navy will be launched in the first half of 2018. It will join the Navy in the same year after it passes all its trials," the press office said.

The mine sweeper Ivan Antonov is the second serial-produced Project 12700 ship. A contract for its construction was signed with the Defense Ministry in April 2014.

The Project 12700 mine sweeper was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. The ship can use advanced sonars mounted both aboard and on remote-controlled self-contained submersible vehicles and has an automated mine-clearing operation control system. It can also use traditional mine-sweeping gear. The Project 12700 mine sweeper is a unique ship as it has the world’s biggest hull made of monolith fiberglass obtained with the use of the vacuum infusion technology.

The lead ship Alexander Obukhov was delivered to the Navy in December 2016. The second and the fourth ships, the Georgy Kurbatov and the Vladimir Yemelyanov, are currently under construction at the shipyard.
