DSME Awarded Contract to Build FFX Batch II Daegu-class Frigate 5 & 6 for ROK Navy

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced today that it has concluded a contract to build the fifth and sixth Frigates of the Incheon FFX Batch II class (FFG-II also known as Daegu-class) for the Republic of Korea Navy. The contract amount is W631.5bn, and DSME will complete construction by the end of 2022. The company also won orders worth W26.6bn for submarines on Feb 2nd.

FFX Batch II frigare displace 2,800 tons, are 122 meters long, 14 meters wide and 34 meters high, with a maximum speed of 30 knots and can be equipped with a maritime helicopter. Especially, for the first time in the ROK fleet, the hybrid propulsion system was applied to reduce underwater radiated noise, so that the submarine detection capability and survivability were improved compared to the existing 2,500 ton class FFX Batch I (FFG-I) Incheon-class frigates.

DSME has the largest number of submarine orders in Korea with 17 vessels. In addition, DSME has secured 46 shipbuilding orders including the latest Aegis ship.

In connection with the agreement, the director of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Specialties Division, Park Doo-sun, said, "The process is proceeding successfully, with the second ship successfully proceeding to Daegu in February. We will also build the 5th and 6th ships that we have won this time without any hitches, and will contribute to the national defense and secure the core power of the ROK Navy."

Meanwhile, DSME received orders for 52 vessels worth about US $ 5.4 billion, including 12 LNG carriers, 18 large-sized crude oil carriers, 18 super large containerships, and 4 special ships.
