Description

The Soryu-class submarine is a class of diesel-electric submarine jointly developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation for the need of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Ten Soryu Class submarines are planned for the JMSDF. The class is an improved version of the Oyashio Class submarine. The class is also referred to as the SS 2,900t and the 16SS project.

The Soryu-class submarines are fitted with air-independent propulsion based on Kockums stirling engines license-built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, allowing them to stay submerged for longer periods of time. Some recent informations suggest that the last units in the series will have their air independent propulsion systems replaced with banks of Li-Ion batteries.

Soryu-class is one of the competitors of the Royal Australian Navy's Collins-class submarine replacement project. Other competitors are, for now, the German Type-216 concept and a French diesel-electric variant of the Barracuda-class nuclear submarine under construction for the French Navy.
