GD NASSCO starts construction of 5th John Lewis class replenishment oiler.

According to information published by the US DoD on August 8, 2023, construction for the USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209), the 5th vessel in the John Lewis-class oil replenishment fleet, kicks off at the General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (GD NASSCO).

The John Lewis-class ships are showcasing a full-load displacement of 49,850 tons. These vessels span a length of 746 feet and boast a beam of 106 feet 5 inches, with a maximum draft of 33.5 feet.

Their propulsion system is formidable, powered by two medium-speed Fairbanks-Morse 12V48/60CR diesel engines, paired with two shafts and propellers, allowing for a top speed of 20 knots and an endurance of 6,147 nautical miles.

With a total complement of 125 personnel, the ships are well-equipped for electronic warfare and decoy operations, featuring the AN/SLQ-25A Nixie torpedo countermeasures.

Their armament includes multiple .50 caliber machine guns and space reserved for potential integration of Phalanx close-in weapons systems or SeaRAM. Further enhancing their operational capabilities, they come with a helicopter flight deck, five refueling stations, and two dry cargo transfer rigs.

Their capabilities mirror those of the Henry J. Kaiser-class replenishment oilers, yet they incorporate modern technology and features. Notably, they can carry a massive 156,000 barrels of oil, offering an expanded dry cargo storage compared to the Henry J. Kaiser class. Underway replenishment is facilitated with stations on both sides of each ship, emphasizing logistical efficiency.
