Japan Navy holds commissioning ceremony for Mogami class frigate JS Mikuma.

According to a tweet published by the Japanese MoD on March 7, 2023, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has officially commissioned the fourth Mogami class frigate JS Mikuma.

The Mogami-class frigate is a naval vessel with a displacement of 3,900 tons (standard) and 5,500 tons (full load). It has a length of 133 meters (436 feet 4 inches) and a beam of 16 meters (52 feet 6 inches).

The propulsion system consists of a CODAG system with 1 Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine and 2 MAN Diesel V28/33DD STC engines, allowing for a speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). The crew consists of 90 personnel.

The vessel is equipped with various sensors and processing systems, including an OPY-2 (X-band multi-purpose AESA radar), OAX-3 (EO/IR), OQQ-25 (VDS + TASS), OQQ-11 (Mine-hunting sonar), OYQ-1 (Combat management system), and OYX-1-29 (Console display system).

She also features electronic warfare and decoys, such as the NOLQ-3E (Passive radar system + Electronic attack capability is integrated into the main radar antenna) and a chaff dispenser.

Armaments on the vessel include a 5 in (127 mm) Mk-45 Mod 4 naval gun, 2 missile canisters for a total of 8 Type 17 anti-ship missiles, 1 SeaRAM, Type 12 torpedoes, simplified mine-laying equipment, 16 x Mk-41 VLS, naval version of Type 03 Chū-SAM, and 2 remote weapon stations. The vessel can carry 1 SH-60L helicopter, which can be housed in a single hangar.

Overall, the Mogami-class frigate is a well-equipped and versatile naval vessel designed for a range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and mine warfare.
