Patria is delivering its mortar system to the Swedish armed forces for the first time as a subcontractor to Swede Ship Marine AB. Amphibious units in Stockholm and Gothenburg will soon have eight vessels that can provide artillery support from the sea. The vessels have been ordered by FMV (Försvarets materielverk) from Swede Ship Marine AB. In addition, Patria is also delivering its NEMO mortar systems for training purposes.

Patria NEMO Navy is a light and compact system, ideal for applications in fast-moving naval fleets and mechanised fleets. The turret can be integrated into a variety of platforms, including Patria 6x6 armoured vehicle, which the Swedish armed forces have already ordered from Patria. This combination will be on display when the Swedish army celebrates its 500-year anniversary [1] at Gärdet, Stockholm, on 27 May 2023.

“We have developed the best possible solution for Swedish amphibious troops together with Swede Ship Marine AB. It is yet another example of Swedish–Finnish corporate cooperation, and it also confirms the unique position of Patria’s NEMO mortar system in the Nordic market, as well
as globally,” says Mats Warstedt, Head of Market Area Nordics at Patria.

Patria NEMO Navy

The Patria NEMO Navy is a turreted, remote-controlled 120 mm mortar system designed for naval applications. As an indirect fire support system, it provides unparalleled capabilities, but what sets it apart is its ability to engage in direct fire, making it a formidable self-defense weapon against other vessels. Additionally, the Patria NEMO Navy has the unique capability to execute Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) fire missions, where up to six grenades can hit a target simultaneously, ensuring maximum impact.

The turret of the Patria NEMO Navy, along with the vessel itself, offers excellent protection against ballistic threats and battlefield contaminants, ensuring the safety of the crew within the platform. Despite its impressive features, this light and compact turret can be easily installed on fast-moving patrol boats and landing crafts, adding versatility to naval operations.

Once on board, the Patria NEMO Navy performs flawlessly, embodying the characteristics that make Patria's game changers of the battlefield stand out: rapid response, accuracy, shoot & scoot capabilities, firepower, protection, and mobility. These traits combine to create a weapon system that excels in various combat scenarios, proving itself a reliable asset in the naval theater.

There are numerous advantages associated with the Patria NEMO Navy. Its lightweight structure takes up minimal space within the vessel, ensuring it does not compromise the characteristics of the platform. Despite its compact size, it boasts a high rate of fire and enables rapid response, allowing naval forces to swiftly engage targets. The minimal crew required for its operation, consisting of the boat/vessel crew, one NEMO weapon officer, and two loaders, further enhances its efficiency.

The direct-fire capability of the Patria NEMO Navy empowers naval forces to engage targets directly. Moreover, the system possesses direct lay capability, enabling accurate fire even without relying on external sensors. The fire-on-the-move capability enhances its effectiveness during dynamic operations, ensuring continuous support to the troops.

The Patria NEMO Navy is not only a formidable offensive weapon but also prioritizes the safety of the crew. With ballistic and NBC protection, it safeguards against threats on the battlefield, mitigating risks. Furthermore, the system is compatible with all standard 120 mm smoothbore mortar ammunition, providing flexibility and ease of resupply.

To further enhance its operational endurance, the Patria NEMO Navy carries a large amount of onboard ammunition, reducing the need for frequent replenishment. Its chassis is designed for high mobility, allowing it to swiftly adapt to changing battlefield conditions. The full 360° rotation capability ensures that no target escapes its reach.

One of the key advantages of the Patria NEMO Navy is its ability to support landing troops effectively. By deploying this highly efficient infantry support weapon system on the same compact-sized landing craft used by the troops, joint operations become seamless. This integration enhances the overall effectiveness and coordination between the Patria NEMO and Patria NEMO Navy units, making them a formidable force.
