Denis Manturov, the head of the Russian Ministry for Trade and Industry, and the vice-premier Yuri Borisov have revealed the prospects for the Russian aircraft carriers. Two statements, made almost simultaneously, throw light on the future of aircraft carriers for the Russian Navy, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

CMN Shipyard in Cherbourg, France, conducted sea trials on the 13th June 2018 on the OPV Thémis from the French Coastguard (Affaires Maritimes). The patrol vessel received a hydrodynamic upgrade at the shipyard by retrofitting the patented Hull Vane®, an underwater wing which reduces the ship’s resistance. Comparison with the benchmark sea trials – conducted in January in exactly the same conditions – by CMN’s sea trial team showed a reduction in fuel consumption of 18% at 12 knots, 27% at 15 knots and 22% at 20 knots. The top speed increased from 19.7 knots to 21 knots.

The 36th Belgian Navy Days were held at the Zeebrugge naval base on June 30th and July 1st 2018. For two days visitors could board several vessels from the Belgian Navy fleet and other European navies vessels. Navy Recognition attended the event. Here is our video coverage.

Naval Group gathered last week, for the third consecutive year, its governmental, industrial and academic partners. Over the course of these two days, Naval Group presented its innovations dedicated to naval-force combat superiority. The exchanges addressed the projects that need to be accelerated to allow Naval Group’s client navies, the first of which being the French Navy, to fulfil their current and future missions.

The Project 955 Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Yuri Dolgorukiy (NATO reporting name: Dolgorukiy-class) performed a successful salvo launch of four Bulava (SS-NX-32) intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) from the White Sea to hit set targets at the Kura training range in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East. The test took place May 22, 2018.

Trials of the latest Klavesin-2 unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) began at a sea range in Crimea. The craft got the official military 2R52 index which means high readiness for acceptance into service. The range in Feodosiya will be used for trials of marine robots. Experts believe the resumption of range operations will accelerate trials and introduction of naval hardware, the Izvestia daily writes.

Pending parliamentary approval, the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) is set to procure a second support ship, two M-frigates replacement and six mine countermeasures (MCM) vessels. The frigates and MCM vessels are new designs under development with Belgium. According to the RNLN, Secretary of State for Defence Barbara Visser informed these wishes by letter to the House of Representative on May 3,2018.

The U.S. Navy down selected five ship designs to compete for the FFG(X) Frigate Program on February 16, 2018. Austal USA, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Lockheed Martin and Huntington Ingalls Industries received a contract award for "conceptual design" of their frigate proposals.
