A contract for the construction of an aircraft carrier for the Russian
Navy may be signed by the end of 2025, Russian Deputy Defense Minister
Yuri Borisov said on Friday. "I think this is most likely to
happen by the end of 2025. Three projects worked out by the Krylov State
Research Center are available. They are rather good. A decision on the
aircraft carrier will be made by 2025," Borisov said. |
As
of today, the Russian Navy operates only one heavy aircraft carrier
Admiral Kuznetsov.
As Head of the Russian Navy’s Ship-Building Department Vladimir
Tryapichnikov said in January 2016, the Navy is expected to receive
a promising aircraft carrier with a nuclear propulsion unit by the end
of 2030. The construction of large amphibious assault ships instead
of the Mistral-class aircraft carriers not delivered to Russia may be
included in the 2018-2025 state armament program.
"We will build amphibious assault ships. I think that their
construction will be included in the 2018-2025 state armament program,"
Borisov said in reply to a question about whether Russia would build
ships instead of the Mistral-class aircraft carriers.
The Russian Navy said last year that it was planning to receive the
first new-generation large amphibious assault ship with a displacement
of about 16,000 tons by 2020. However, Russia’s United Ship-Building
Corporation said that it had not been assigned a task yet to develop
a new landing ship.
