The U.S. Navy USS Asheville and the French Navy Rubis-class Émeraude submarines practiced high-end maritime skills in a multitude of disciplines designed to enhance interoperability between maritime forces. The USS Asheville is one of four forward-deployed submarines assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 15.
The USS Asheville is one of four Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarines assigned CSS-15, which is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Apra Harbor, Guam. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.

The submarine was built by the companies Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 26 November 1984 and her keel was laid down on 9 January 1987. She was launched on 24 February 1990.
The USS Asheville is powered by a 26MW nuclear pressure water reactor GE PWR S6G, developed and supplied by General Electric. the submarine can reach a top surface and submerged speed of 20 knots (23 mph; 37 km/h). She has an endurance of 90 days with a crew of 129 people. The submarine is armed with 4× 21 in (533 mm) torpedo tubes able to launch Mk 48 torpedo and 12 VLS (Vertical Launching Systems) able to fire Tomahawk land attack cruise missile and Harpoon anti-ship missile,
The Emeraude is a Rublis-class (S 604) nuclear powered attack submarine in service with the French Navy. The submarine was launched in April 1986 and commissioned in September 1988. She is powered by pressurized water K48 nuclear reactor and the auxiliary propulsion consists of a diesel-electric SEMT-Pielstick and Jeumont Schneider 8 PA4 V 185 SM engines. She can reach a top speed of 25 knots with a maximum cruising range of 8,500 nautical miles ( 15,700 km).
The Emeraude is armed with four 533mm tube able to launch F17 Mod2 torpedoes as well as Exocet SM39 anti-ship missile.
