According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, the new ship is more sophisticated compared to the previous platform of the class, ‘Ivan Gren’. “Each following ship of the project — two platforms are now being built at the Yantar Shipyard — will be more modern compared to the type ship, ‘Ivan Gren’, in terms of performance. The adoption of the ‘Pyotr Morgunov’ apparently shows that the process of the Navy’s armament with green water ships is ongoing, and our industry has mastered the construction of such platforms. The Project 11711 ships will dramatically enhance the landing capabilities of the Navy,” said Yevmenov.

“The ‘Pyotr Morgunov’ is set to start the voyage to its home base within the Northern Fleet in early 2021,” noted the admiral. According to the commander of the ‘Pyotr Morgunov’ Captain 2nd Rank Vyacheslav Solovyev, the crew of the ship has been fully trained to accomplish its goals.

The Project 11711 large landing ship ‘Pyotr Morgunov’ was launched in May 2018. The type ship of the class, ‘Ivan Gren’ was handed over to the Navy in June 2018. Since April 2019, the Yantar Shipyard has been constructing two more ships of the class, ‘Vladimir Andreyev’ and ‘Vasiliy Trushin’.

The Ivan Gren class, Russian designation Project 11711, is a class of landing ship that is being built for the Russian Navy. The class was to be composed of two vessels, Ivan Gren and Pyotr Morgunov. The first ship of the class, Ivan Gren, was laid down on 23 December 2004. The hull of Ivan Gren was completed by the end of November 2010 and was launched on 18 May 2012.

The Project 11711 Ivan Gren has a length of 120 m (393 ft 8 in), a beam of 16 m (52 ft 6 in), and a displacement of 6,600 tons. The ship is able to carry 13 T-90S main battle tanks or 36 armored personnel carriers (APCs) along with 350 troops.

The Ivan Gren is powered by a Kolomna 10D49 diesel engine and can reach a top speed of 18 knots (33 km/h) with a maximum cruising range of 3,500 nmi (6,500 km) at 16 knots (30 km/h). The ship has a crew of 100 people. She has a hangar and landing deck to accommodate two Ka-27 ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) or Ka-29 naval helicopters.

The Project 11711 Ivan Gren is armed with one 30 mm AK-630M-2 naval gun, two 30 mm AK-630 guns, and two 14.5 mm KPV type automatic guns.
