French Navy plans to test laser weapon Helma-P mounted on ships in 2022

The Helma-P is a laser weapon system developed by the French companies CILAS and ArianeGroup. The new laser weapon system was tested in October 2020. It can neutralize in-flight targets up to one kilometer away in a matter of seconds.

The Helma-P is able to destroy any type of drone flying at a speed of up to 50 km/h and in difficult target tracking conditions.

HELMA-P provides operational units and internal security forces with a new weapon with a technological breakthrough. Effective at greater distances and providing a radical effect, HELMA-P can support other anti-UAV technologies. HELMA-P is therefore the ultimate neutralization solution.

The system is offered in fixed or vehicle-integrated configurations and is compatible with a C2 (Command and Control) process or a BMS (Battle Management System).

Compared to existing ship self-defense systems, such as missiles and guns, lasers could provide Navy surface ships with a more cost-effective means of countering certain surface, air, and ballistic missile targets as well as drones. Ships equipped with a combination of lasers and existing self-defense systems might be able to defend themselves more effectively against a range of such targets.
