The end-user is the Canadian Department of National Defense (DND). Under the contract, Kraken will provide upgrades, testing, and new hardware and software for the ThunderFish® 300 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that DND acquired from Kraken in 2019.

The Kraken ThunderFish is a highly advanced, 6000 meter rated, Hovering Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (H-AUV).

Features of ThunderFish include high-density polymer encapsulated, pressure tolerant Li-ion batteries. The batteries are quickly swappable, and of low enough cost where a vehicle system is designed to work with three sets; one running the vehicle, one charging, and one charged and ready to go. Additionally, by using Kraken’s DataPods, mission data can be instantly offloaded from the vehicle by removing and replacing a pod. Together these
two systems enable ThunderFish deck turnaround times of under 30 minutes.

The advanced hovering capability of ThunderFish enables it to function both as a traditional survey vehicle and an inspection platform. Base payloads include the Kraken MINSAS Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar and SeaVision 3D Color Laser Scanner.

Both systems are designed to provide extremely high-resolution data sets and coverage rates to reduce survey times. Additional sensor suites can include Multibeam Sonar, Sub Bottom Profiler, Magnetometer, oceanographic sensors, and cameras.
