Russian Project 955A submarine Generalissimus Suvorov will enters service in late 2022

According to information published by Tass on October 14, 2021, the Project 955A (Borei-A-class) second serial-built strategic nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarine Generalissimus Suvorov currently under construction at the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) will be delivered to the Russian Navy in December 2022, a source in the shipbuilding industry told.

United Shipbuilding Corporation Deputy CEO for Military Shipbuilding Vladimir Korolyov told TASS in September that the cutting-edge sub Generalissimus Suvorov would enter trials in 2022 and currently the underwater cruiser was being prepared to be put afloat.

The strategic nuclear-powered submarine Generalissimus Suvorov was laid down at the Sevmash Shipyard in Russia’s northwest on December 26, 2014. The sub belongs to the fourth generation of nuclear-powered submarines developed for the Russian Navy. Currently, four Project 955 and improved Project 955A submarines are operational in the Russian Navy. The fifth sub of this Project, the Knyaz Oleg, will be delivered to the Navy in December 2021.

Compared to the baseline Borei series, Borei-A subs feature better acoustic stealth, maneuvering and deep-sea running capabilities and an improved armament control system.

The Borei class, Russian designation Project 955 Borei and Project 955A Borei-A are series of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines being constructed by Sevmash for the Russian Navy. The Borei submarine is approximately 170 meters (560 ft) long, 13 meters (43 ft) in diameter, and has a maximum submerged speed of at least 46 kilometers per hour (25 knots).

Borei-A submarine is equipped with improved communication and detection systems, improved acoustic signature and has major structural changes such as the addition of all moving rudders and vertical endplates to the hydroplanes for higher maneuverability, and a different sail geometry. This submarine is also equipped with hydraulic jets and improved screws that allow them to sail at nearly 30 knots while submerged with minimal noise. According to a Russian report, the Borei-A is able to carry 20 Bulava SLBM and is armed with 16 SLBMs with 6-10 nuclear warheads atop each, just like the Borei submarines.
