Hetman Ivan Mazepa (F-211) is an Ada-class anti-submarine corvette of the Ukrainian Navy currently under construction. Hetman Ivan Mazepa was named after Ivan Mazepa, a prominent Ukrainian Cossack leader. The ship was officially laid down on September 7, 2021.

Following the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, Ukraine lost much of its surface fleet, including the corvettes Lutsk and Ternopil. The loss of such ships constituted a significant reduction of the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy, and prompted a renewal of efforts in reviving the navy.

As part of these efforts, a memorandum was signed with Turkey which included both the purchase of armed drones and the construction of corvettes for the Ukrainian Navy.

Within the framework of these agreements, it was envisioned that the corvettes would be jointly built by Turkey and Ukraine, with the works on the Ukrainian side planned to have been realized at the Okean shipyard.

Despite the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, construction work on the corvette continued. By a decree of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the corvette was given the namesake of Hetman Ivan Mazepa.

About the Ada class corvette

The Ada class is a class of anti-submarine corvettes developed primarily for the Turkish Navy during the first stage of the MILGEM project. The Turkish Navy has commissioned all four Ada-class corvettes.

The class vessels are propelled by a RENK CODAG Cross-Connect propulsion plant. It consists of a gas turbine rated at 23,000 kilowatts (31,000 hp) and two diesel engines rated at 4,320 kW (5,790 hp).

Each diesel engine drives one controllable pitch propeller via a two-speed main reduction gear. The cross-connect gear splits the power from the gas turbine via both main reduction gears to the two shafts.

The corvette has a length of 99.56 m (326.6 ft), a beam of 14.40 m (47.2 ft), and a draft of 3.89 m (12.8 ft). She has a displacement of 2,300 long tons and can carry a complement of 93 sailors (with accommodation for up to 106).

The ship can be operated in Diesel mode, in single gas turbine mode, or in CODAG mode. CODAG is where diesel and gas turbine engines are providing combined power (27,320 kW).

She is armed with 76 mm (3 in) Oto Melara Super Rapid, two 35 mm Oerlikon Millenium, two 12.7 mm Aselsan STAMP, eight anti-surface missiles Harpoon, anti-aircraft missiles VL MICA-M and two 342 mm MU90 torpedoes.
