Hanwha Systems starts development of mine detection system using AI & Big Data.

According to a PR published by Hanwha Systems on December 15, 2023, the South Korean defense contractor, has initiated a project to develop an advanced mine detection system that integrates big data and artificial intelligence.

The project, in collaboration with the Agency for Defense Development, is valued at approximately 280 billion won and aims to improve the detection and neutralization of underwater mines.

This development is part of a rapid prototype acquisition program that seeks to shorten the time typically required to deploy new weapon systems. The program incorporates civilian technologies into defense applications, aiming to respond more quickly to technological advancements.

The system being developed by Hanwha Systems is intended for use by the South Korean Navy. It will utilize AI to analyze extensive data sets on various types of mines and seabed environments, which could enhance the Navy's capabilities in detecting and responding to underwater mine threats. Mines are a significant challenge in maritime security, particularly due to the complexity of marine environments.

The project involves a two-year research and development phase, followed by six months of military trials. Hanwha Systems plans to supply the Navy with both a shipboard and a land-based training version of the automatic mine detection system.

The initiative reflects a broader trend in defense technology towards incorporating advanced technologies, such as AI, to improve military capabilities and readiness.
